Building Regulations Review - Section 61 and 62 renewable energy

By Polypool
One of the laws of physics states that heat flows from a warm body to a cold one, cold bodies being block and concrete swimming pools. This is why Polypool advocate insulating swimming pools.

This has already been realised by the government with regard to Building Regulations covering Conservation of fuel and power.

Part L1 for Dwellings.
Part L2 for Buildings other than Dwellings.

After being implemented in 2002 the new regulations govern the legal requirements regarding the use of correct insulation to conserve energy and at the same time reducing the Co2 emissions into the atmosphere.

Polypool realised over a decade ago the amount of energy used to heat an un-insulated swimming pool, it was this fact that led us to design the very first insulated swimming pool, which was installed in Hampshire.
We felt then as we do now, as the demand for swimming pools has increased so has the demand for energy to heat those pools has increased and will go on increasing as more people acquire pools.

As there is no legislation in place to regulate the insulating of swimming pools they will continue to be built placing more demand on energy consumption thereby increasing the Co2 emissions?

Over the past 8 years Polypool has commissioned two consultations on the advantages of insulating swimming pools, in both cases the conclusions were the same.

Once a pool had been insulated correctly it became 80% more energy efficient, and reducing the demand on the national grid. This is why we advocate that all pools should be insulated. If all new pools built in the UK were insulated, an estimated 18,000 tonnes of Co2 emissions could be saved each year which is an enormous step in reducing the effects on the ozone layer.

In Conclusion

The industry is ready for change and should look at more up to date methods for pool construction.

It is due to all the above facts and the continued increase in demand for swimming pools, which the Government should adopt within the Building Regulations the design and insulating of swimming pool.
